But men benefit from the same diet change
Happily, it does not really matter. Should we give the credit to the lack of food triggers, a hormonebalancing effect, or something else?
Migraines are only half as common on Athos as in the United States. Emphasize pain-safe foods: brown rice; cooked vegetables, such as broccoli, collards, spinach, and chard; and cooked or dried non-citrus fruits. Sublingual drops of progesterone in vitamin E oil are also available and may be more rapidly absorbed. Dr. Lee also suggests trying it as a treatment when a migraine hits, using one-quarter to one-half teaspoon of progesterone cream every three to four hours until symptoms subside. Starting with a two-ounce jar, you spread a bit on thin skin each day so that you use up one to two ounces over the ten days before your period.
For migraines, John Lee, M.D., a leading progesterone proponent, recommends using a nonprescription, trans dermal (skin-applied) progesterone cream, such as Pro-Gest. It can help women with migraines, at least those who get their migraines around the time of their periods.-42; Natural progesterone is derived from wild yams, and in this part we looked at its remarkable ability to protect bones. A natural, nonprescription hormone, called natural progesterone, may also help counteract hormone shifts. This is a helpful step.
To do this right, however, it is important not only to avoid animal products but also to keep vegetable oils to a minimum. The pain-safe foods, such as brown rice and vegetables, are rich in fiber and are extremely low in fat, unless you have added fat in cooking, so they also happen to be among the best at reducing hormone shifts. You don't have to choose one menu to avoid food triggers and another to change your hormones. An optimal diet helps in all these ways. The monks never eat meat or milk, and they fast frequently. A case in point is Athos, a small peninsula in northern Greece, where fifteen hundred monks live. They are similarly rare in parts of Latin America where beans, rice, and tortillas are still the order of the day.34-37; Hormone shifts are a bigger problem for women than men, at least for migraines. If you were to venture into rural China, where the Western diet has not yet made any inroads, migraines are much rarer still. In Hong Kong, where diets are somewhat westernized but still retain much of their Asian heritage, migraines affect only 3 percent of men and 7 percent of women.
