Red wine does seem to be among the most potent triggers
None had a headache from vodka, but nine of the eleven developed a headache from just one glass of red wine. They tested them with a glass of disguised Spanish red wine and also with a vodka-lemonade mixture. Although some have been skeptical about the link, London researchers tested eleven subjects who believed that red wine triggered their headaches. Histamine is also found in champagne and other wines, beers, cheese, fish (especially tuna, mackerel, and mahimahi), sausage, and pickled cabbage. Histamine has a major effect on blood flow; which is probably why it contributes to migraines. More importantly, red wine contains a huge amount of histamine, which is famous for the sneezing, runny nose, and sinus problems it can cause and that are treated with antihistamines. PEA, which is also found in red wine and many cheeses, disturbs normal blood flow in the brain.-; Wines also contain natural flavonoids that come from the skins and seeds of grapes, as well as sulfites, all of which are under scrutiny for their contribution to migraines.
Chocolate contains phenylethylamine (PEA), an amphetamine-like chemical that may be part of the reason why it is so addicting. Second, our bodies sometimes react to the proteins in certain foods with strong symptoms, including pain. The history of chocolate has some odd twists, as recounted by Martha Barnett in her book Ladyfingers and Nun's Tummies. By concentrating cocoa butter and adding it to ground beans, a smooth chocolate was produced that could be sweetened with sugar and molded into enticing shapes. Nothing resembling modern chocolate existed until 1828, when a Dutchman named Conrad van Houten invented a machine that could piss cocoa butter from cocoa beans. Europeans sweetened it with sugar and added vanilla, nuts, and other flavorings. Aztecs used it to make a beverage, a rather bitter ancestor of hot cocoa, which they shared with the Spanish conquistadors. The cocoa tree is native to South America and was brought to Mexico by the Mayas. Chocolate was not invented in Switzerland.
