Ironically, this analgesic effect may actually be the reason why caffeine withdrawal causes headaches: caffeine's painkilling action may suppress your natural defenses to pain, and withdrawal leaves you with less than your normal resistance to pain. IS It is often added to aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and ergotamine to enhance their effects. It actually has analgesic properties that can be used to fight headaches. Caffeine has a good side, however. If your daily routine includes just one cup of coffee or two cups of tea or two colas, all of which hold about 100 mg of caffeine, you can get a headache as early as eight hours after your last dose. However, most practitioners use capsules containing about 250 mg of a standardized-potency feverfew; recommending one capsule per day taken on an empty stomach. The amount that has been shown to prevent migraines in research studies ranges from 50-114 mg per day.
Feverfew is sold at all health food stores. It will more likely either have a much more noticeable effect or no effect at all. This does not mean that it will eliminate precisely one-fourth of your headaches. Averaging everyone together, it eliminates about one-fourth of all headaches. However, while some people get a pronounced effect, others get none at all. Researchers at the City of London Migraine Clinic found that feverfew eliminated about two-thirds of migraines in a selected group of headache patients, which is similar to the effectiveness of most migraine drugs. It works. It was all but forgotten in modern times until it reemerged as a popular migraine treatment in Britain in the late 1970s. It has also been used to treat arthritis, gynecological problems, and many other conditions.
Its name comes from the fact that the ancient Greeks and many later societies used it as a treatment for fever. It is native to the Balkan peninsula and has spread to much of Europe, where it can be seen in hedgerows, on walls, and wherever no one has mowed recently. Feverfew is a wild plant with yellow-green leaves and daisy like flowers. Avoid it if it is a migraine trigger for you. If you tend to get headaches, it is best to avoid coffee, but when a migraine actually hits, you can use it as a treatment, having one or two cups at the first sign of an attack.
